One of the experiences that I remember most fondly is having done the French Way from Sarria with my daughter Charlotte 20 years ago. She was 8 years old. The Camino made me see our relationship from another place and recognize it in something bigger than ourselves.
Since then, walking together has been a shared experience, deepening our connection and creating opportunities for growth and well-being.
When Gail, one of the participants of two previous “Finding Your Way’ Camino trips told me told me that she would love to do the Camino with her daughter, it seemed like an exciting opportunity for many mothers and daughters. A once-in-a-lifetime experience to deepen the mother-daughter bond and join with others in community to create shared memories.
Therefore, In June 2024, we are proposing a special Mother/Daughter Duo Camino. My daughter Charlotte, trained in psychology/sociology/theater and Gestalt therapy, will accompany me. We both speak Galician, Spanish and English fluently. Gail Kennedy will be joining us as the US contact for the trip. Gail has participated in two of our previous Caminos and has recently retired from a career in Public Health. Gail works as a wellbeing consultant and volunteers with Yolo Cares, the community hospice in Davis, California where she, her late husband Scott, and her daughter have lived for 25 years. Gail’s 22 year old daughter Amelia, a senior in college in San Diego, CA will join us for the trip.
The first part of our pilgrimage, from June 15 - June 25 will take us to Santiago along the Portuguese Coastal Route, a newer route that follows the Atlantic coast north before turning inland to Santiago. It is a stunningly beautiful route and a cooler alternative for the summer months. We will arrive in Santiago de Compostela on June 23 to be able to jump over the San Juan bonfires at night. The night of San Juan is a very celebrated festival in Galicia, a very powerful ritual of purification by fire. On June 24th we will have a day of rest to enjoy Santiago and on the 25th the second part of our pilgrimage will begin. You can decide to stay in Santiago at this point or continue with us on the second part of our pilgrimage to Fisterra, the final destination of the Camino.
From June 25th - June 30th, we will journey to the end of the known world of the Middle Ages, to the Costa da Morte, the place where pre-Roman peoples believed that souls ascended to heaven, the Cape of Fisterra.
The Fisterra Way is the most faithful realization of the historical cry of the pilgrim exclaiming Ultreia! (Let’s go farther beyond!) while another responds with Et suseia! (and higher!). It is beyond the goal of Santiago and seeped in ancient tradition.
